George Haslam’s first instrument was clarinet, he soon added tenor saxophone and switched to baritone sax in the late 1970s; he added the tarogato after working in Hungary throughout the 1980s. In 1986 he led the first British jazz group to play in Cuba and later was the first British jazz musician to play in Argentina. Voted 19th of all time world greatest baritone saxophonist, his music has covered blues to classical but most notably improvisation. He travels worldwide, mainly as a soloist, and made over 30 CDs and LPs and several Radio 3 programmes. He established the SLAM CD label in 1989. Of all his projects, his association with Mal Waldron was particularly important to him, resulting in two of his finest CDs and a wealth of experience and memories. His education work includes 25 private pupils, workshops, swing band and wind ensemble.
